I Want to Break Free - QUEEN

Escrita por John Deacon, fue lanzada en UK el 2 de abril de 1984 y fue todo un éxito en UK, llegando al Nº 3 y permaneciendo 3 semanas en esa posición y 15 semanas en los charts británicos. Pero fue Nº 1 en Holanda, Austria, Bélgica, Nueva Zelanda, Finlandia, y lo curioso es que lo fue también en Bolivia, algo que salió en "El Comercio" cuando cada semana informaban las canciones que eran Nº 1 en países sudamericanos. Además fue Nº 2 en Irlanda y Suiza, Nº 4 en Alemania, Nº 5 en España, Nº 9 en Francia y Australia y Nº 26 en Canadá. Pero, desafortunadamente apenas llegó al Nº 45 en USA, y aquí comenzó el declive comercial de QUEEN en USA. Y mucho tuvo que ver el video clip que se grabó para este single.

El video de "I Want To Break Free" fue dirigido por David Mallet, era una parodia o sátira de la novela británica "Coronation Street", en donde los miembros del grupo, disfrazados de mujeres, interpretaban a un personaje de dicha novela. Freddie era la mucama -y con bigotes-, Brian la mamá, John la abuela y Roger, la niña de la casa, con colitas incluso. Asimismo, el video mostraba imágenes de la banda en su look normal y rodeados de fans disfrazados como mineros y finalmente para la parte instrumental en el medio del tema, mostraba una pieza musical de ballet en donde Freddie bailaba al lado del Royal Ballet. En ese año 1984, yo no pude llegar a ver ese video en la TV, y fue recién en 1987 cuando una pen-pal americana me mandó un video en VHS con diverso material de QUEEN, entre ellos, el "THE WORKS EP". Mientras que en Inglaterra y Europa, el video fue tomado a la broma y visto como una parodia, no sucedió lo mismo en USA. La doble moral americana condenó el video por considerarlo como un trasvestismo y no como una sátira, e incluso la MTV llegó a censurar el video y no llegó a pasarlo en su programación, algo aberrantemente absurdo, en una época en la que Boy George con Culture Club eran todo un éxito en USA. Se supo además, que muchos fans puristas de QUEEN y sobre todo, los fans del rock duro de QUEEN, no les hizo nada de gracia ver a sus ídolos disfrazados de mujeres en un video, lo cual contribuyó a la debacle de QUEEN en USA. En una entrevista acerca del "GREATEST HITS", Brian May señaló que el video arruinó a la banda en USA, donde mucha gente -a diferencia de lo que sucedió en UK- no vieron la conexión entre el video y la novela "Coronation Street" e interpretaron el video como una abierta declaración de travestismo y de la homosexualidad de Freddie. Este estúpido eprejuicio alrededor de estos temas podría explicar por qué los siguientes singles de QUEEN en los años posteriores fracasaron en los charts de USA, hasta 1992 cuando "Bohemian Rhapsody/The Show Must Go On" llegó al Nº 2 en USA. Sin duda, reflejos de la doble e hipócrita moral americana. Y lo curioso fue que John Deacon fue el autor del tema que llegó a ser el mayor éxito de QUEEN en USA con "Another One Bites The Dust" y asimismo -sin pretenderlo, claro está- fue quien escribió la canción que significó el puntillazo final a QUEEN en USA.

Radio Ga Ga - QUEEN

Radio Ga Ga es una canción escrita por Roger Taylor, baterista de la banda de rock británica Queen extraída de su disco The Works. La canción trataba el tema de la creación de la televisión y como fue desplazando a la radio a un segundo plano y como uno escucharía en la radio su comedia o drama favorito mientras que se crea el video musical y la MTV. El video de la canción fue incentivado por MTV, convirtiéndose en una presentación regular en el canal.

Originalmente, Taylor pensó en llamar a la canción "Radio Ca-Ca" (ya que, al parecer, él habría escuchado a su hijo decir una frase similar), pero al final quedó como "Radio Ga Ga" debido a que "Ga Ga" era más fácil de pronunciar, además de que "caca", en otros idiomas, como el español, es sinónimo de excremento. La canción fue lanzada como sencillo del disco "The Works", y alcanzó el puesto número 2 en el Reino Unido y el 16 en Estados Unidos, alcanzando gran éxito alrededor del mundo sobre todo en el continente americano.

Radio Ga Ga se convirtió rápidamente en una favorita para las presentaciones en vivo de la banda. Durante el Live Aid, Freddie Mercury llegó a concentrar la sincronización total de todo el estadio durante el coro en que el público imitaba los aplausos que la banda presentó en el video musical (de hecho Freddie lo realizó en todas las actuaciones de esta canción en directo), llegando a ser uno de los puntos clave para que la actuación de Queen ese día llegara a ser considerada como el mejor show de la banda. La canción ha sido interpretada en casi todo concierto desde el The Works Tour, pasando por el concierto en Río de Janeiro ante más de 320 mil espectadores seguido del Magic Tour y, más recientemente, durante el Queen + Paul Rodgers Tour, en el que la canción la comienza cantando Roger Taylor, para luego dar paso a Paul Rodgers para que siga cantando como se puede ver en el DVD realizado en la ciudad de Sheffield en 2005, aunque actualmente, en 2008, la canción es cantada por Paul Rodgers, con armonías de Taylor y todo el grupo. Durante el Concierto en Tributo a Freddie Mercury, la canción fue interpretada por Paul Young.

Fue catalogada como una de las canciones más influyentes y exitosas de los años 80, gracias a su videoclip y a las actuaciones en directo. Era una de las preferidas del público, que cantaba y palmeaba a la vez que la banda la interpretaba, actuación similar a la del video.

De acuerdo a una entrevista con Ron Slomowicz, el nombre artístico de Lady Gaga surgió como una referencia a esta canción.¹

David Mallet fue el director del video musical de la canción, la cual presenta escenas de la película de ciencia ficción Metrópolis, dirigida por Fritz Lang en 1927.
